The Problem Isn't Jonathan

I love GGG but they need to stop bouncing so quickly between POE and POE2. Get POE2 to 1.0 and stop messing around. POE has been around for years and the fanbase will always come back. We are 1 year from when we said POE2 would be 6-12 months away and we are still at the start of 0.4

I agree.

PoE2 is a failure at the fundamental design stage, they tried to mix soulslike "slow and meaningful combat" with an ARPG that prioritises speed and screen clears. They are trying to fuse two fundamentally incompatible game designs and managing to annoy both camp of fans!

Until they admit this and make a damn choice which genre they're going to make the game we will be in this whiplash inducing back and forth every patch which is killing interest in the game in general.

Also they need to hire more people, the last poe1 patch was lacklustre, 0.4 was an obvious rush job with all the weird visual bugs, they've STILL not fixed Nvidia reflex (even though drivers fixed it and other games are working with it without crashes) and these constant gaffes across both games stinks of a dev team that's being rushed and having to pause development to ship a "good enough" product on time.

I enjoy the game mechanics. I am a souls veteran since 2010, and I have to disagree with the 1 to 1 comparisons to souls games. To an ARPG player, it is a souls-like. To a souls veteran, it is only mildly inspired by souls.

Finally someone said that <3
Were people blaming Jonathan? Do they not know that Jonathan was one of GGG's founders, and big part of what path PoE1 what it is, not just PoE2? Man, I feel like the discourse took a real turn while I was just having fun playing the game.

Anyway... OP, I agree, Jonathan is not "the" problem, or even "a" problem. The game is still far from finished, and I can understand that some people are feeling a little frustrated with the pace at which the finish line is approaching, but it seems to me like the game is a pretty decent place, generally speaking. Once they finish the end game re-work, and if we can convince them to also re-work the Trials (please, GGG? pleasepleaseplease?) I think PoE2 will be amazing. It's already pretty damn good. IMHO, of course.

Gotta agree there. In general, gamers tend to have very high expectations and will show their frustrations very easily, but yeah, PoE's playerbase has somehow felt extra much so to me over my time with PoE1 and then PoE2.

Games are hard to design and to develop, and it takes a lot of time. The studio was tad bit too optimistic about the pace of development, but well, that's a very common mistake.

I have a theory. GGG (wittingly or unwittingly) created such an addictive (and fun) loop, that maybe a lot of the players are going through withdrawal. Even Jonathan said in an interview around affliction, that a lot of player may need experience detoxing after what a loot pinata that league was.

I've watched every interview as well. I don't know Jonathan personally, nor do I care to speculate about his personal ambition related to this project.

A project leader HAS to lead by definition. He is constantly being harassed by the fan base. Going defensive is natural.

However, with that said I think that they are going to need to adjust their tactics. Hire more people. Change the business structure. They need to hit realistic goals while listening to feedback.

Right now, they are pigeonholing every play style that is unintended. That is the problem I have. They need to start prioritizing fun and stop taking everything so seriously.

If Jonathan would go into Discord and go talk with people or go here into the Forum and talk with people he probabyl would not get a lot hate.
People tend to not directly hate a person if they talk to said person.

I do think going and talk with a wider range of people and what tehy want the game to be than just a small portion of people that represent a group of people (streamers, Youtubers) would be improve the game as a whole. It seems there is a huge missunderstanding about weht the game is supposed to be, what the future game would look like and what the community wants. Nobody know what the endgoal with the game is. Its just unclear which direction the game is heading right now. Does GGG even know is the question.

You cant just get a good picture if you just read feedback. Well GGG might be undercover tho.

Very much this. They either don't know, are too scared to pursue it, or they haven't expressed it very clearly to us.

The biggest frustration for me right now is the state of endgame. I like what it was in 0.1. If it becomes more like PoE1, that's also fine. But right now, it's a worst-of-both-worlds middle of the valley. You have an endless atlas that dictates what areas you can run, but you no longer have any purpose to geography, now that towers no longer define areas. It's isotropic and homogeneous, so you may as well not have an atlas map anymore, but it's still there as a reward-less constraint.
