The Problem Isn't Jonathan

The best things in human history were created by people who didn't cater to an audience: paintings, music, literature - you name it. The most beautiful creations are great because their authors didn't listen to people who often have very different opinions about what a work should be. Those creations are great because the creators had their own idea of what the result should be. Imagine if someone like da Vinci had held daily meetings consulting everyone who had anything to say about his next painting. He didn't and now we have a beautiful artwork.

Sometimes what we need and what we want are two different things. Look at EA games: they develop the same titles over and over again annually. People like the games; they are entertaining, but are they really outstanding or memorable?

TL;DR: Let him cook.

All art and music was made on the request of a patron .
They were literally told what to do , paint, or write.
Why classical music is religious, the church paid for it.
Sistine Chapel , David, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven ..... paid and owned
They were great becasue if they sucked they would starve to death in an alley.

Down crack pipe down!!!

Jonathan is easy to blame because he is the person we all see. He holds responsibility for the success and FAILURES this game has. That is a difficult position to be in.

i mean we can only react to what we know..., Jonathan is the Director from POE2, therefore since hes the public vieuw person see from POE2 we have to point it towards him..., ofc we don't know whats going on in the background, since GGG in itself is completely bought out by TENCENT at the end of the day, it could be them puting hands on Jonathan shoulders to say what to do (highly doubt it) related to skills anyway...

that being said..., its for Jonathan to respond and be honest about the situation and explain whats what, thats how a busisenss works at the end of the day.

I am going assume that everyone reading this has hundreds of hours into this game. That is a lot of time. A lot of time you could have spent elsewhere. You didn't though. You spent it on POE 2. For some reason everyone here loves the game not for everything that it is, but everything it could be.

Yes, because we are still looking for something to latch onto, for something worth playing. And this something is usually encountered in the endgame or by making different builds. Basically, we experiment until we can't do it anymore, so we drop the league and come back for the next one to look for that special something. And all of this because we need to feel that PoE 1 magic again

I can’t presume to know who’s ideas and who’s fault anything is but there are deliberate choices made.
“The maps are too big”
-oh so you want checkpoints?
“No the maps are too big”
-oh so you want sprint?
“No. The maps are too big”
-silence

How about herald of plague or herald of ash.
They are both overkill. So why do you need a martial weapon?

I’ll give a good example. Last league one of the abyssal holes was in the way of a path I needed to go down. I couldn’t see it because of ground effects. The janky sprint kept clipping on it while the frozen laser guys kept killing me. Because I couldn’t see it, I had no idea why nothing was working. “Oopsie poopsie, there goes your XP.

Some of the choices in this game reek of contempt for the player.

I've watched every interview he has done on poe2. You can clearly see he is making the game for himself and not the player base. You can see his reactions when something is brought up that he is unwilling to even consider it. There are reasons why a lot of the talent has left GGG and it's showing in their product.

This, 100%. He wants to play this game where you run around in magic gear at level 50 and do combo rotations against white mobs for several times. He wants this "get 3% damage if you dodged recently" bullshit. He wants you to have negative attack speed as a warrior. He loves it, he wants to play some survival game with no resources. I doubted that he is the problem but after watching interviews i am pretty sure he is.
He doesnt want to make game not punishing. And even if he wants he doesnt know how to do it so people don't hate it. Souls games are punishing, but i still love them.

The better you get at souls games, the game itself doesn't get any harder. Lets say you learn to parry effectively during the gaol before stormveil. That knowledge carries throughout the game. If you encounter a boss later on for the first time and you parry effectively, the boss doesn't do a gotcha attack and punish you for it by taking all of your runes.
Or lets say you go into stormveil and before the fog to Margit, there is a minotaur with an aura that zaps your stamina while pinning you to the wall making it impossible to fight or get away. Now imagine going back for your runes and this guy is standing on them.

If these things happened in a souls game, the customer base would cry foul and the game itself would lose a large chunk of it's player base.
Somehow here, it's fine.

The "You Died" screen has become a meme of sorts. I think someone at GGG wanted that meme in PoE2 but it's untenable here. In a souls game, you'll struggle to find a handful of things that could be considered "unfair".
In PoE2, there is a pile of it.

Before you run to comment, please take a moment to read.

I have been more vocal this league than I ever have been. Why? Because I think that this game is special, but there are major pitfalls the development team is running into that is holding this game back.

Jonathan is easy to blame because he is the person we all see. He holds responsibility for the success and FAILURES this game has. That is a difficult position to be in.

I am going assume that everyone reading this has hundreds of hours into this game. That is a lot of time. A lot of time you could have spent elsewhere. You didn't though. You spent it on POE 2. For some reason everyone here loves the game not for everything that it is, but everything it could be.

There needs to be changes with the game, and leadership if need be. However, Jonathan and Mark (and Chris) have built a game that everyone here wants to play regardless of how many times these patches ruin our day.

With all that being said. I think that GGG does not have the staff necessary to pump out the content they are promising. Those broken promises are the issue, and that is not a Jonathan-only problem.

Personally i have 1325 hours in PoE2 and on 0.4 since i dropped it couple days after launch most of it is 0.2 and 0.3. Here is the problems how i see it. First of all PoE 2 is going through a major identity crisis. This whole "vision" they keep describing to us is that they are trying to make an ARPG that basically isn't an ARPG. This attempted departure of the game from the genre has caused so many problems. And ill list them here.

-Gems/Skills. This here is my main grievance with the game. In this current system you have a lot of combo builders -> combo spenders and all are locked behind very specific conditions including weapontypes and even with the current talisman iteration specific shapeshifting type. You can't use walking calamity out of bear form, you can't use lunar assault out of wolf form. It feels like the devs have created a build for me that i can barely deviate from because it's easier for them to basically turn it on and turn it off. It's easier to either make it overpowered or underpowered. We saw what happened when players in PoE 2 find unintended interactions like Last Lament Witch, they get gutted because in the current vision you HAVE to play what the devs want you to play. I think without major rework in this system this game is going to die in the cradle. We need more freedom in making our own builds and GGG needs to not be this heavy handed in buffs and nerfs.

-Passive Skill Tree. Again, the game pushes you to energy shield. Why? Why can't there be life nodes? Why can't the topside also have some utility like movement speed and it's herded at the bottom right side of the tree? Why can't the bottom side also have some better defensive options. The tree needs work. It lacks lots of utility and build expression.

-Map sizes. Once you reach Matlan Waterways the whole game turns into such a slog. I struggle to understand why maps need to be this big all throughout Act 3, Act 4, some of Interlude is also an offender of that and of course mapping. Right now there is these vast patches of nothing you need to traverse and i know there is sprint but if there is no abyss the whole thing feels empty.

-Vaal Ruins. Worst mechanic so far in all of the history of PoE 1 and PoE 2 easily. This needs to be scrapped, reworked, rethought, it just doesn't fucking work. It's worse than Kalandra and that's tough.

-Doors. Since PoE 1 i hate this, i fucking loath it. WHY must there be doors that you open. What is the functional purpose of that other than a slight annoyance. Guess what Vaal Ruins have. LOTS OF FUCKING DOORS.

I would have if POE1 has received proper leagues.

Let's don't pretend who makes a bulk of POE2 players - POE1 players. I bet you, if POE1 received a truly well received league with high end game scaling, in depth league and proper balancing, POE2 numbers wouldn't be that great.

Also, GGG incentivise streamers to jump wagons with microtransaction for subs - every streamer do it because no one will say no to money.

Take that away, and let's see how good is POE2 without all the padding.

This is quite possibly the single most interesting and unexpected complaint I've seen on these forums. Although I do not share your passion (WHICH YOU OBVIOUSLY HAVE) I will gladly support you in your efforts to eliminate every and all doors.
