One Try Per Map is Antithetical to The Fun Established in POE1's SC Experience.

I genuinely don't understand why when we open the maps, it shows 6 portals and we only get 1 try. It feels so antithetical to fun. I don't know if it's because zones are tied with the monsters respawning, and so instead of them doing that in maps you just get one try, but even that part (respawning) isn't fun, it's tedious, especially in these huge zones. Big hits and unexpected hits still occur, and although I don't want POE2 to become POE1, I really think the endgame SC mapping experience wasn't broken. Everything about POE2 maps feels like a natural progression of that, and an improvement in almost every way, but the one-try-per-map experience just feels like two steps backward.

I haven't gotten to end game yet, but its something I worry about. Some bosses (at least in the campaign so far) have parts that feel like getting lucky to avoid, or have attacks that if I miss time just flat out kill me instantly if I miss time the roll and it makes me worried for mapping. It also feels like it goes against the whole "learn a bosses attacks and timings" if we only get one chance at it. It just seems to heavily encourage nuke builds.

Having ONE chance at a map sucks especially with some rare modifiers being really insta kill-y, or creating combos that entirely fuck your character like temporal aura or only being hittable when your close by. These can combo with other rare mods to make them the deadliest thing on the planet

this is probably one of the reasons i will just stop playig.
while its obviously somewhat my fault for ending up dead... it just feels bad to lose a whole map like this.
Doubt that will change tho
So what about two portals?

Or three?
I want to clarify that I do love the danger monsters pose, and how actively I have to play, it's very engaging. I just genuinely wish that if GGG took anything from POE1, it's the six portals. Most of us aren't HC-Andys.
you automatically will play savely tho since you want to level up and not reset your level. so you are punished for screwing up anyway tbf
Not at endgame yet but I absolutely cannot understand the decision to have mobs respawn and loot despawn on death. I'm really enjoying the game for the most part, the slower pace and higher challenge feels very nice, as does the fact that multi-skill builds are way more viable than in PoE1 (honestly the "press 1 button over and over to kill everything while zooming around the map at hypersonic speeds" meta of PoE1 was getting very, very old), but barely killing a boss, then dying to some residual ground effects or adds or a dot while some juicy unique or a nice currency item drops just feels absolutely terrible.
I'd much rather ditch the checkpoint system and rely on portals, but not have the respawning mobs and despawning loot on death.

And by the same token, I can say already with certainty that only a single "life" for maps, especially when you can fail them permanently on the atlas this way, will feel just as bad. If not worse.
Permanently failing a map after using up all your portals, okay. That's fair. That's as it should be. But after dying once is honestly a bad design decision, just as the respawning mobs/despawning loot is.

+1, I did not know this was a thing, and was legit asking in global chat to see if my game bugged or something...

This is the reason I already stopped playing, until they remove that.

Tbh, just make a separate game mode for those who want the gigapunishing content. I don't like the loot shower I felt today either. I didn't like the fact that I gambled and crafted, but still had only around 20 decent items in my entire 60h playing before todays patch. I REALLY disliked Sanctum and Ultimatum being mandatory for ascending.

I don't hate the game, there is a lot that I like and only a handful of things I dislike, but the things that I dislike are a lot bigger and meaningful than the things I do like.

Just gonna take a break, hope they fix the stuff I don't like, and try again later.
+1

I also dislike this "YOLO" thing. It's especially painful when you begin mapping as you can easily get pinned down or get one/two-shot by some rare with nuisance mods. I honestly don't see any issue with the first PoE mapping system. The mapping system WAS PoE.

It honestly feels like a bug if anything but it's not their "Known Issues". There's no reason for it. Give us back the 6 portals.
This isn't POE1.
