Granted the drawbacks do become zero in late game builds.

But then, there's strong enough of a drawback as it is that especially on HC it's risky if not downright suicidal to go straight into Blood Mage.

Most players wait until the 3rd ascendancy and early maps before they switch to BM.

I'm a bit torn between BM being OP or not. Yeah, once a build is properly kitted out, BM is extremely strong. It's also very versatile, supporting many different kinds of builds.

But on the other hand, if you don't have top tier gear or the specific strongest builds for it and if you need survivability for HC, it's honestly very well balanced with Lich and Disciple in the top part of the tree, and pretty balanced with Invoker, Acolyte, Pathfinder and Amazon in the right part of the tree.

Balancing survivability vs damage is always gonna be problematic in SC, because players simply accept the risk that they are likely to die every 100 or so maps or every now and then on the hardest bosses. If you weaken BM - whether its damage or defenses - while leaving the other ascendancies I mentioned as they are, you're just gonna kill it off from HC.

I am biased of course since I play only HC, but in my opinion, HC is the better basis for balancing ascendancies, because a significant amount of SC players will just ignore defenses anyway so you can't meaningfully balance defense vs offense on SC.

[Removed by Support] It's been quite over powered and basically the strongest late end game ascendancy for like 3 leagues in a row now.

Of course, it's really only a few spells that stand out. Most aren't very good. It's always Spark, Comet, Lightning Warp (a little less this league, but there are still some builds with it). Though Rake + Blood Hunt was a thing too...

I think the main issue is that crit is just too strong vs non-crit builds in the game right now. Blood Mage having such strong crit ascendancy nodes makes it one of the highest damage and overall strongest ascendancies in the game by default.

If non-crit builds had better ways of scaling their damage to be competitive, Blood Mage wouldn't be so dominant.

I like how the Blood Mage ascendancy is designed. I don't think it needs to be changed. The problem is that a lot of the other ascendancies in the game are not anywhere near as well designed and that crit is too overpowered.

It is very strong but I think its real strength is the fact it can use blood magic. Most builds I see these days are blood magic because they refuse to make mana costs reasonable. This is the real strength to the ascendency. The only mana builds I see anymore are MOM builds which is basically just switching HP and MANA.

Death to that class that keeps newcomers newbies forever, without learning absolutely anything about the game!

They dont need to delete it, they just need to buff the other stuff. And agree, crit is too strong and only way to scale damage. They need to add more dmg stuff in thats not crit. Infusions is a good start.

I think BM is only "good" in the context of SC trade. But SC trade is the worst league to balance content around.

Blood mage is only good when you don't have to worry about defense AND you can buy the very best items.

I think it's fine the way it is. If anything it could use some buffs to it's early game.
