Why doesnt the game pause while you are in a menu?
"Neither does Diablo 3. Its single player is played online just like POE. |

" IF you are NOT in a MULTIPLAYER game. But, POE is set up as an always multiplayer game, considering you dont have to pre-form the party to start a map, you can invite someone any time and the difficulty changes based on that, at that time. True Diablo 3 allows it, when not in a party, but you also cannot invite people to your part in the middle of a greater rift and have them participate, they have to wait til a portal is opened while they are in the party. The reason this is most likely disallowed in POE, is because it would be abused. If someone didnt want the penalty of death for taking on something that was too great a challenge for them, they could simply hit escape, everything stops, log out and pop back up in town. Maps are not difficult to get ahold of, but gaining all that XP back from death is painstaking and annoying, even more-so the higher level you are. This would skirt that entire thing. |

" Neither does D3. "Single Player" just means multiplayer without other people in the game. It's still "online" in the same fashion as PoE is; you don't locally host, the D3 server still controls the game and it's still very much subject to lag. Again, I don't even agree with the premise that adding pause to PoE is a good idea, but claiming it's somehow a different premise entirely to D3 is flatly wrong. D3 (atleast the PC version) doesn't have an explicit "Single player onry" mode anymore than PoE does. You can stop people joining your games, and while you are alone in a game going into menus pauses the game. That game isn't intrinsically any different in any other way than a multiplayer game; it's still on a D3 server and otherwise identical to a game with multiple people in it. In the screenshot above I am alone in the game and thus it can pause in menus. At any point someone can join my game and it will no longer be paused if I enter a menu. The game otherwise doesn't change; I don't have to change a setting to allow people to join it. They just click "join game" on my game, and they are in. In exactly the same fashion, you can start your own map in PoE, enter solo, but it's still hosted on a GGG server. At any point, assuming you accept the party invite, someone can come into your HO and join your map instance, and it becomes a "multiplayer" map, but the time you are in the map solo is not intrinsically different in any way except that the player count is one. PoE is an online multiplayer, says who?
And who cares for? It is me alone to decide, if I play online alone or with others, but there is not one reason to play with others. The game can be done alone, solo as single player. The games may give you the chance to play with other players, but is not forcing you, like other games, that need to play with others. It is called MMO and please do not tell me that PoE is MMO, it is not for god sake no. So if PoE can not pause while you are playing alone in an instance, no matter you call it map, riftabyss or questing area, as long there is no other with you to share your pausing, why should it not be possible to give an option like the other game does? |

The guy above already said why, death penalties would be gone, unless you're one shot. Unless you have some physical handicap you can easily pause before you would die in almost every situation. Also, not being able to pause creates a lot more tension.
Need a new signature, cuz name change. I dunno though. I guess this seems fine. Yeah, this is good.

" ppl are already doing it. press esc and log off. a pause would not make much difference. stop kidding yourself everyone plays fair. also, i see no reason to have this "competitive" attitude when there is basically almost no competition in poe. except for the few top players with a crapload of time to spend in game, most ppl don't make it that far in anyithing. " There's nothing competitive about it, if you aren't getting punished for mistakes in a game it's a pretty pointless game to play. If you want to cheap your way out of the punishment you're being competitive, being more concerned with looking like a good player than playing the game properly. Need a new signature, cuz name change. I dunno though. I guess this seems fine. Yeah, this is good.

" dude... not everyone is enjoying being punished. think a bit outside of what YOU want. when i play a game, i want to have fun playing. and having to TP to lose a map portal if i need to do stuff IRL, or lose the sulph of a delve node (which basically you can't even use TP on) or die cuz 1 little piece of crap monster came from 10km away after I killed everything around me, or X... or Y... there are plenty of situations where you just want to freakin pause the game for whatever serious or ridiculous reason this is a quality of life feature, not more, not less. i have nothing against things that punish you in game, but when a game punishes you for wanting to take your eyes off of it for whatever reason IRL - then i have a problem... |

Holy crap, stop the presses! What? An online game is supposed to have a pause function and let you abuse the system so you never die and are never penalized for taking on more than you can handle? WHAAAA???
|

You want to know why you cannot pause the game? You cannot pause the game because all of the hardcore streamers would abuse it to avoid deaths and being sent into the Standard league. It's already bad enough that all of the hardcore players abuse exiting the game before they die to save their characters.
Remember when I won a screenshot contest and made everyone butt-hurt? Pepperidge Farm remembers.
