Why are we punished for investing into our build

I agree, but have you seen the passive trees that players have used to make those builds work.

Id argue its not fun, not creative and actually invasive to some degree. But I see your point. Its on the devs to create alternative methods to solve these problems but they just havent in many cases.

There's lots of more ways than the passive tree to work up your mana.

Support gems like Clarity, Siphoning Mark, Font of Mana, Mana Leech, Mana Bounty; Efficiency. On some builds a single source of mana leech on the gear can make a significant-enough difference that you go from constantly being out of mana to rarely being out of mana.

Mainly for the campaign - there's very cheap uniques for solving mana issues. I've often ended up running most of the campaign with Midnight Braid, if I happen to have particularly high mana costs due to e.g. having many +x skill levels. It's a common enough of an unique that there's some chance of scoring it even on SSF.

In end game, many builds solve their mana issues just from the mana regen and +int/mana from gear.

For e.g. Sorceress setups, there often isn't all that many nodes you need from the passive tree. Usually Efficient Casting and Conservative Casting are enough, and they aren't far from the paths you might want to take anyway for DPS, survivability or utility.
