Don't turn this game into Path of Exile 1

POE2 was supposed to just be a massive expansion for POE1. However GGG realized that an expansion wouldn't attract as many old and new players as a new title would.

It worked as expected, drawing in a lot of players, even those who quit POE1 and don't play that anymore.

However the goal was always to be POE1, but better.

Possibly, but what to copy from poe1 and what not is a big concern.
For example i think using ideas of single passive tree for all and skill gems and overall build freedom and diversity is good.
Using cool mechanics like stun, ailments and defenses like ev/ar/es is also good.

But copying steroid zooming and screenblasting mindless gameplay is bad.

It's an ARPG with a graph-theory based character formula sheet. There's not much deviation you can make from their original design because of how the game functions at this fundamental level.

PoE2 shouldn't turn into PoE1. Keep the combat more challenging, especially bosses and mobs as well, obviously.

Bossing going down within seconds isn't fun, facerolls and 1-click screen clears isn't fun and never will be.

The interview yesterday revealed a lot. They said they want to attract a new audience for POE2. Which means it will be different in some ways from POE1. POE1 will be maintained to keep existing POE1 players.
I don’t want to play two poe1 games.
I’d like the game to be less complicated and more interesting.
I don’t like god mode and strategy guides. That’s how poe1 is played.
Poe2 is slowing becoming the game all the streamers want.
Something they can play all day and show the world their powers.
What in needed to catch up to that gameplay?
Build guides….
When poe2 becomes 1 this game will have failed and all the possibilities of being able to play two games will have merged and retired me as an exile.

I'm not sure you heard the entire interview. They spent almost a minute emphasizing that people view the two games as more different than the devs do. This implies that (few mechanical concepts aside), the games are meant to be very samey.

What you're referring to was Mark subtly implying that they make more drastic decisions in favour of new players in PoE2. That literally means nothing for the endgame outside of stuff like:
- Introduce leagues earlier
- Tutorialize mapping
- Tutorialize crafting
- Decouple overly coupled systems
So they want onboarding and have more focus on accessibility. That does impose a few rules on the game, but the game is still Path of Exile.


I say all this being firmly in the camp that prefers the early campaign over the endgame. I think making 2 games in 1 is going to inevitably piss off both camps, while also initially onboarding both.

I personally feel POE2 has a big identity problem overall and different departments dont seem to talk with each other, even within POE 2 team:

While the art direction is beautiful they ruin it in terms of visual clarity which is totally contradicting to the other goal of" meaningful combat". You can never have this if you cant see sh.t. Also difficulty should not be motivated that you cant see anyithing (undless you design a horrow game maybe ;)), a lot of times I look on the minimap to locate the boss if he has ported because I can not easily see him :)

Other than that I think POE1 has much more mechanical interesting ideas ( if feel the more creative people work for POE1), whereas mechanics introduced in POE2 seem like (a cheap) remaster of the old mechanics that - as a long term POE1 player - look pretty boring to me. So for me if feels besides the optics and visual appeal POE2 gets the short end of the stick in new patches and leaques.

Currently I see only a handfull of new ideas thtat differente it from its predecessor.
