The templar is wearing something very similar to a chiton... It's obvious that he's based on Greek and/or Roman history. They didn't wear pants.

Pants are a fairly high-tech invention. Skirt type wraps are much more common in the world's cultures... it was usually contact with Europe that brought pants everywhere (and particularly the association between pants and males, which in non-western societies is often reversed and which, if you think about it, is kinda backwards).
