does this apply to AoE generated form the proj? it was a while since i played merc but the MP on nades did seem to shotgun mobs.
if the skill has additional effect in some cases they can overlap
but that requires to lower ur attack radius and doesnt work on most skills

for example if u use a skill "explosive shot"
on a single target the extra shots(projectiles ) will not hit the target but the explosions from the skill can overlap
the more projectiles u shoot the more explosion u do and those explosions can overlap and hit the same target
but the projectiles themself will hit only once per skill use
maybe i dont understand ur question =/

yeah so this means that AoE generated from proj will shotgun. meaning its a yes to my question. thanks

Also yes to mine, it's a damage boost with xbow nades/explosive shot, i was about to cry ;(

So why dualstring bows with 3 extra arrows are still bis? is it just for clearing?

the atk speed reduction makes it very bad feel to use
Correct me if im wrong on the math, but in its current nerfed form, assuming an AOE component that does the same damage as the projectile and overlaps so it hits the single target on all:
1 Projectile = 100 damage/sec
1 AOE explosion = 100 damage/sec
Single target without Scattershot, using a conservative generic 25% more multiplier support
(100+100) * 1.25 = 250 damage/sec
Single target with scattershot:
(100+300) * 0.65 * 0.8 = 208 damage/sec
Things get much more complex when you consider more than one target, or there's a different effectiveness of the AOE component, but for any build where attack speed matters with the above condition of the AOE equaling the projectile damage, Scattershot is a 16.8% LESS damage support gem. This has made it feel even worse to use in high monster density situations where you do not do enough damage to clear before you are overrun.
Back when i saw the nerf to the gem, i thought it was going to be bad but i never considered it was that much. Guess I shouldn't have used that one my Arsonist and Cold Mage setups on 0.2 start, after all. HAH!!
I think the overall nerfs of 0.2 hit support gems way too much, when the real culprits were the many other areas, like Skill effectiveness scaling, Keystones, Spirit gem scaling, etc.

Uhm, not a genius in math but considering explosive shot for example, it had a projectile and aoe component so according to your math (100+300) should be instead (300+300) (3 projectile + 3 aoes).
did i read that right?
No because only 1 projectile can hit the same target, got it.
But things get different if using grenades where you only have aoe so you get less damage on a single grenade but 3x that for the actual damage, correct?
Looks to me you should do the math on 1 aoe only then 3x that value, not apply the reduction to all 3 aoes, but like i said not a genius :D

Calculation is the same as the 300 included the 100 * 3
Where AOE is the only consideration and attack speed isn't a variable, assuming you're hitting with all 3, total damage for single target would be:
300 * 0.65 = 100 * 3 * 0.65 (as requested) = 195
While using the same generic support gem without scattershot you'd see 125 single target dps. I have yet to run a grenade setup so i know nothing about the workings of the skills, but in this scenario it seems like it is still a good increase in damage (70/195 = ~35%) since the attack time or whatever is no longer a consideration. With the old 25% less damage mod (i think), the damage increase was just over a 50% multiplier. This was maybe too much, and its just unfortunate that many other setups using the gem got caught up in the crossfire of this nerf.
I just hope in the future they start removing some of the support downsides (or at least limiting it to only one downside) and start baking those into the skills.
