I would also be in favour of balancing the game around single-player experience and not for trading. But that would require a huge increase in drop rates and I think GGG and many players are against this, so we probably have to deal with it.

I don't think it needs an increase in drop rates, so much as 99.99% of drops not being garbage, and of the very few that aren't garbage, only a tiny fraction of those are actually useful for your character.

The game could do with fewer drops, but less low tier mods on high item level items; more drops that are aligned with your stat make up, rather than evenly distributed across all the item types; and so on.

Basically, both trade being as desirable as it is and loot filters being a thing people see as a requirement speak volumes as to how bad the dropped loot implementation is.
