I found a checkpoint embedded in the landscape on steaming springs

Same here, for me it was the checkpoint at the start of the map. Teleporting to it leaves you stuck in the terrain (you can still portal out or teleport back to another checkpoint).

Yeah, it is 100% a base bug after 0.1.1. Do not teleport to it. You will be stuck in the environment and the only option is to portal out.

I encountered the same thing, for the checkpoint near the initial portal spawn.
