The statistics alone paint a grim picture. There's a factor that few are paying attention to, and it isn't religion, or culture. It is law enforcement and accommodation. While there may and certainly are people willing to commit unspeakable crimes, the government must be consistent in its response to these crimes. If the government's response is not adequate to dissuade criminals, then that response needs to change.

Consider the environment (WAR) where many people are coming from. The lawlessness of such an environment breeds contempt for the usual social rules and taboos. Coddling people who are coming from such a disrupted life and day to day survival in the midst of war is NOT the answer. Anyone coming from such chaos needs a well structured environment where they can gradually re-adapt to living life without trying to not get killed each day.

What is happening now is like taking someone who just survived open heart surgery and expecting them to start a job doing manual labor the next day. There's a very real culture shock for the refugees. The people who just think happy thoughts and ignore the culture clash aren't helping the refugees either.

The refugees have lost their homes, their country, and likely have lost friends or family. They minds and hearts need time to heal, and during that time, a lot of extra work and guidance is necessary to keep them safe, the people around them safe and the refugees on the path to becoming whole again.

The wars they are fleeing from aren't something new, they have been going on for a very long time. What is new in the past several years is how intense and extensive the violence has become.

There is a real problem, and the solution will take a lot of work, but it can be done. There will be those people that just won't follow the laws - and harsh penalties (consistent with the laws) will need to be applied. Consistency of application, and reevaluation of the laws when they aren't working will help.

It is tough to watch a nation like Sweden where so much good psychology was formulated completely miss the psychological underpinnings of their current problem.

The most scary thing in this story is that the authorities were trying to cover it up as long as possible, to not provoke "anti-immigration sentiments". Similarily, the lefitsts in power in Sweden prevent the police to register nationality statistics on crime, because it might turn out that most of the crime (esp. rape) is done by foreign nationals / immigrants. And that could embolden the anti-immigration sentiment. No shit.

I would like to expound on that a little. First off, a lot of the so-called refugees aren't actual Syrians running from the war. They are economic migrants. They come from predominantly Muslim countries from Africa to Afghanistan. Second, in most of these countries a rape victim might be stoned to death by her relatives because she dishonored the clan. Anyone who thinks this is far-fetched, feel free to google honor killings. In many ways, women are treated worse than cattle in these countries. It's not because they're coming from war zone, it's because of their entire culture and mindset.

What, these guys are more likely to be violent towards women? Who would have thought?
