Failed to Connect to Instance Server

I can make a character, but I cannot log into the game. I get the "failed to connect to instance server" message. I live at a University, so I understand this is likely due to the school's firewall. However, I read that PoE uses many ports, and likely at least some of them are blocked by the school's router.

I really want to contribute to this game, but that is unlikely given how many ports PoE requires. Many students at universities will be in the same predicament as me. Making PoE more accessible to this audience would benefit the game's success.

Maybe I'm wrong, and my school's firewall isn't to blame. In that case I welcome any suggestions to being able to log into the game. However, I have tried just about everything.
