Druid campaign experience
|
I looove the Druid. I've been leaning into Wyvern skills. They all individually feel great, and weaving in Spells between both melee and ranged attacks is awesome.
I leaned really hard into Empowered Oil Barrage. I went heavy on Stun for all my other skills so against bosses I could consistently get Power Charges from Wing Blast and go into it. Not super creative, but it felt quite fun. Devour is SO SICK! It makes me feel extra monstrous chomping into everyone. I wish Druid had more lines for Devour against different enemy types. I do worry that Rolling Magma is a kind of 'odd duck' among the skills. I ended up not using Volcano much because, despite its synergy, I got more utility and consistent damage out of Entangle + Thunderstorm. While I don't mind Volcano being a more niche options for tight corridors, slower enemies, etc. it feels weird to start out with such an inconsistent, support gem-reliant skill early on. Also, do Talismans not get +X Level to Projectile Skills mods? Maybe Talismans could have +X Level to Shapeshifting Skills instead to cover all bases? I don't think +X Level should be in the game at all, but like, two of Wyvern's major skills are Projectile-based... +X Level to Melee Skills is really awkward on Wyvern. I don't think the Strength/Intelligence slice of the passive tree has enough Spell nodes. I used Weapon Set Skill Points extensively for the first time and you just get soooo many more Attack and Shapeshifting-specific nodes than Spell ones. I also found it frustrating not knowing how certain passives work with Weapon Sets. Emboldening Casts and Enhancing Attacks don't track previous skill uses when inactive, so despite seeming like perfect candidates for Weapon Set points, they're not!! I wonder if passives like this should come with a warning when you try to use Weapon Set points on them, like: "This skill stops tracking when swapped!" Something like that. Act 3 I kinda dread going through again. The forest half of the Act is just sooo huge and formless and not very interesting. I also feel like all the biomes are too samey—it's forest forest forest forest forest temple temple temple temple temple. I wish some of this was reorganized or truncated so it didn't get so repetitive. Act 4 is like, the best Act in any ARPG. I haven't played that many, but I get so hype playing through it again. The characters, the locales, the stories... Going through the Eye of Hinnekora? That's the coolest run of levels in any ARPG. Druid's voice lines and special dialogues are pretty lame. He doesn't feel particularly sad or angry or helpful, just all over the place. His character feels very ill-defined to me. It thought this League was too easy through the Campaign. I kept making multiple super-strong weapons back to back, even when I already felt really powerful. I kept Heavy Stunning-->Oil Barrage-ing bosses to death WAY too consistently. Like, in one sequence of Heavy Stun-->Oil Barrage. The Vaal Temple really stinks. I just hate it. I hate walking into a room and immediately getting swarmed, and having to awkwardly roll and chug potions until I get into a position safe enough to start attacking. I hate all the inconsistent rules about what makes paths and what doesn't. I hate that I don't get to rotate paths myself. Just everything about this stinks. It takes a long time, it's easy to get lost. Please make tile-laying more fun. Please make pathways connecting rooms larger. Please place enemies in the MIDDLE of the room, not right at the entrance. Please show us on the map which terminals/crafting stations we've used and which we haven't. Just make this more fun, please. I tried doing the three-stage Trial of Sekhemas and HATED IT. It takes so long and you're constantly getting unfun bonuses out the wazoo. I hate how your choices and playstyle shrink as you accumulate Afflictions, and how Afflictions are either utterly devastating (like taking extra damage from individual hits, instant killing you on multi-strikes) or just nothing (like losing all Evasion as a character that doesn't stack Evasion). It's like, if this map and challenge and boon/affliction design were in a proper roguelike, it would be a terrible roguelike. Just because it's a minigame doesn't make it better. Maybe you could look into the more interesting difficulty mods from Hades or the genetic traits in Rogue Legacy 2 for conditions that both make the game more difficult and more thinky, stuff that's a downside and an upside simultaneously. I did, like, an hour of endgame, and once again I just feel like, "What's the point?" I know we control the difficulty modifiers we want from Waystones, but I'm just not interested in the haphazard playstyle modifiers bring. Like, everything's just like, there are more monsters, they deal more damage... YAWN! And I don't like many of the modifiers crazy Rare enemies start getting, either, because they just make you dodge around a lot. Like, instead of considering your position in a more nuanced way, like considering areas of possible damage overlap, or getting into 'checkmate' scenarios, you just have to constantly dodge or evade between single attacks until you have an opening, which feels really dorky and lame. I don't feel like I'm in an epic dark fantasy battle flailing around slowly bobbing elemental dodge balls. I wish it was more obvious how to improve defenses in late game. I keep getting blindsided by deaths I don't really "get". Like, I don't know how much of anything I'm suppose to have. I try to nearly max out my Elemental Resistances, and a ton of my skill tree is devoted to making defenses better, but it still feels like I die to random spikes of damage I can hardly see. Or like, sometimes on the same map, I'll just tank through a swarm of enemies and kill them with strikes, and other times I'll get stunlocked and die, but to me, they seemed like identical situations. Please stop putting damaging pools of blood or poison in dark areas, or in areas with walls!! It's so easy to overlook them.
