Rng gated content is bad game design
|
As the title says. Yet, GGG seems to fall into this trap every single time. You can count on it.
Arbiter of Ash: You need to farm three fragment in citadels which randomly spawn on the map. Some people still haven't seen a single citadel this seasons. Rare tablets are gated behind beating Arbiter of Ash. Bad game design. King in the mists: Luckily they have changed this to be splinters now instead of a single item, Invitation of the King. Back when it was you could go a hundred ritual maps without even seeing it, let alone being able to afford it. Chance and affordability of Omens are gated behind it. Bad game design and seemingly they should have learned a lesson here. I guess not. Ascendencies: For the 3rd and 4th set of ascendency points we again have a system where content is massively gated behind rng. From finding the tokens to access it, to the rng of afflications in either of the two, to room setups and paths in sekhema. Again, bad game design. The fact that the first and second set of ascendencies are tokens of a set level you can replay over and over shows you that they know exactly how bad this design is. Expedition: This time it is splinters you collect, but the ability to collect them is gated behind rng in the form of logbooks. Tbf, it's not that bad but it's still the same trap fall of rng gating content. T16 waystones: You need to corrupt your waystones for a chance at them. Yet, they are required for atlas boss points. If there is an abundance of t15 waystones and vaal orbs then it's just an annoying chore of corrupting waystones, but with how rare waystones are again it's actually not that easy to get. (and the prices for t16 waystones reflect that) And lastly, this seasons seasonal mechanic: the temple. Once again, we fall into the trap of rng gating content. And it feels worse than ever. You can be one step away from the Architect or Atziri and for multiple temples not the get a correct pathway to get there, which equates to dozens of maps you have to play. Bad game design. And there is tons more of examples: How tablet rng gates access to seasonal mechanics behind rng. It's not that bad granted, but the same bad game design. Idk, they really need to find a better way of doing this. Because the way it is now a lot of these are just gigantic time wasters where you aren't hampered because of you not being able to do the content but rather because you didn't grind the rng hard enough.
