Barkskin is bugged

I receive barkskin armor from getting hit for a little while, then randomly it'll stop working. I get hit, no armor gain. The icon doesn't appear in top left AND the armor wont show up in character sheet.

I can "fix" it by turning it off and back on again, but then it just deactivates after a while again.
