Pew Pew Sound Design
Hello,
you know, there is a weird trend in the sound design industry going on at the moment. Mobs that do awesome stuff are going like with a stuttering sound effect... Sounds are hard to describe. It's like somebody is turning the volume lower and normal again repeatedly while the sound is playing. Also when the titan does the laser it's doing this BEW effect (like literally someone did like "BEW" into the computer and distorted it). I have watched some anime and there's one called Fire Brigade. And everybody was talking about it and it also had these BEW effects and the low bass and everything. Really cool. But it becomes really stale really quickly when you realize that somebody is probably copying other people's ideas. Just saying, that's what it feels like. And honestly, we've heard this stuttering sound effect in so many other games before. I think it was Battlefield that also did it. But I could swear that at least a thousand other games do it, too. Where is the originality in sound design? Is everybody just copying other people's work nowadays? Also, do people think this is what the kiddos want? Sometimes I got the feeling that GGG thinks of their players not as players, but as "the target audience". You know? That's just a feeling. In kind regards Zuletzt angestoßen am 26.07.2025, 00:55:00

" I'm a sound designer myself and I have no idea what you're trying to describe here, let alone be aware of industry trends. |

Maybe that volume effect is just hard compressor/limiter on master channel. When there are lot of loud voices it starts to compress more and some voices go low volume.
Kind of better than risking overloading the channels and getting loud scratch or noise sounds. |

Actually, I tried to find those sound effects I was describing and had a harder time than I thought. I found some examples in Battlefield trailers, but they were not as apparent as I wished they were.
But here is what I mean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EzzS5NzKRM It's from Transformers, apparently. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PIxjSip8QQ This too, kind of. And the anime is called Fire Force: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WP1E3Nmqw0 Granted, the BEW of the Titan doesn't quite sound like that. I still got reminded of it. Edit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYTF28TGWZ4 Second 24. Here it's a sound that is just something being played repeatedly in a high frequency. But the effect of someone turning the volume off and on repeatedly comes from the fact that the sound that this is supposed to represent, for example in Path of Exile 2, is some kind of mob roar, which would not be cut off usually. I don't know how to better describe it and I don't find a better example right now. Maybe I will still. Apparently though the BEW Titan soundeffect sounds really similar to the Battlefield sound effects used in trailers. EDIT: Found a better video to explain what I mean. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T14Er_xHRRo The first minute is enough to explain. EDIT2: I also realized a trend, which is I think also true for other games like for example Overwatch 2, that people talking to you have to kind of sound like they're almost singing. Like there is this woman in act 2 that sells you martial weapons and armors and stuff and she says a line like: "I will put this to use" when you sell her something. Pay attention to how she says it. I guess it was an aesthetic choice, but it just feels off to me. Zuletzt bearbeitet von Naharez#3496 um 26.07.2025, 01:54:32
