shield charge targeting with controller will often go in the wrong direction

This has happened to me multiple times. I am standing toe to toe with an enemy. We are stationary and exchanging melee hits. I am directly in front of him and I press shield charge without touching my right stick............why does that not auto target the mob i am facing in melee range?

It doesnt do this ALL the time, but it does it frequently enough that I am writing my first ever forum post here.
