Skill gem disappeared around Cast on Block interaction.

I had a level 19 Comet skill gem with 20% quality with cold mastery in my skill list. I had equipped Svalin Crucible Tower Shield and tried to socket the Comet into Cast on Block. Instead it slotted the Cold Mastery support gem into Cast on Block and my Comet spell gem disappeared.
