Corruption altar bug

In act 3 of poe 2, Jiquanis sanctum. Found a corruption altar, and thought I was supposed to put an item in it to make it corrupted. I put my staff in it, and then closed out of the pop up screen. It then ate my weapon and i am unable to right click to interact with things on the map, like the corruption altar to get my staff back or a portal to go back to the base camp.
