POE 2: Lose 10% of exp
Lose the map
Lose league mechanics

Why does POE 2 have more death penalties than POE 1 does?
3 death penalties in POE 2 are too much.

I think POE 2 should let players choose their own death penalty from one of these three.

Lose 10% or exp or Lose the map or lose a few league mechanics from your atlas map.

but losing map is frustrating, just delete 50% of open portal or let only 1 portal

Compromise Proposal: Killing ALL monsters in a map provides a temporary buff that allows the player to revive once in their next map without losing any of its modifiers/rewards and halves the XP Loss for the next death to only 5%.

Those that want to blast through maps by only clearing the rares can still do so, but they forfeit the optional safety net that comes from a slower, methodical approach.

I like that, at least it’s creative.
You forgot the fourth penalty:

-lose all unpicked loot

XP penalty probably will stay, they've already invested in this ancient mechanic with the omens that reduce said penalty. However having even more punishments than that feels terrible. If those penalties stay they really shouldn't use the word "softcore" to describe that game mode.

Remove XP loss. It is frustrating and discourages players, causing many to quit the game.

what makes me not laugh about this whole death penalty thing is that most dark soul games will allow to to retrieve lost xp after you die. Not these evil runts though. Hey GGG you wanna make a dark souls game? then make it right you evil, greedy idiots
A good compromise is progressive death penalty starting from 3% -> 6% -> 10% -> 15% -> 20% resetting after map completion.
