I planned out a skill tree only to have skills taken away from me.

A day before release the new POE2DB site allowed me to plan out a skill tree for characters, so I planned out a cool skill tree to follow for making a melee focused mercenary, only to be forced into using crossbows for most of Act1 for lack of other options.

Now my character is screwed because all I've got is a shitty low damage crossbow. And crossbow skill gems only.

(The game hasn't taught me how to have an alternative skill tree for another weapon yet)

By trying to take a ranged DPS class and shoehorn a melee DPS build onto it, you are basically trying to force a square peg into a round hole; then when it doesn't fit and the effort is futile, suggesting that the game is to blame for the situation.

My 2c, just shelve PoE2 for the next few days/week and re-roll a new character once the community has produced some proper league-starter build guides so you can compare those build choices and learn from it while clearing campaign.

Thats what POE is for. All my characters for POE1 are mixed use and they all work. As you can see in the picture, half the merc tree is for melee. But merc cant use melee for most of act1, its bonkers.

Do you know how to access the second skill tree for another weapon like they showed in the videos? or was that fake news? Now that I've got to play POE2 I see ALOT of what was said in the previews from GGG was fake advertising.

Its like that liar doesnt even know whats in the game which is exactly what I suspected when I first saw him. GGGs version of "It just works".

You don't have to force yourself using crossbow skill gem you can use any skill you want just remove the option in setting that prevent it.

I got some weapon specialisation points but theyre not skill points, Im not sure how theyre supposed to work, it still requires me to use normal skill points to use them (turning them orange), but it does not give them back for use in the alternate skill tree when I switch.

The game is not fully launched yet, it's in early access with a lot of the content and features still to be implemented.

What are you even talking about? Just buy a melee weapon and pick melee skills. You can do this when you enter town the first time.
