Short newb elementalist advice please

I'm new to elementalist and short of reading guides (which I dont want to do) I'm just looking for a bit of advice on the "Shaper" ascendancies.

I'm in Act 5 playing with Arc and liking it.

- I picked Shaper of STorms. That means I can always apply an ailment of its type with it; but does that mean I can safely spec less into crit and stick more into damage via EO?
- Is there anything preventing me from picking another Shaper of later to also freeze with the same skillset (mostly Arc)?
- Not sure what to ddo wwith the rest, ddoes anyone use golems?
