Unequipped Gear Disables Other Gear, Unable to Reequip

This is a chicken and the egg problem that really fubars item equip requirements. This is a problem in PoE because the client does not perform the proper checks on deactivated items when a user attempts to equip another item.. But when the items were previously equipped there was no problem with requirements.

1.) Example character with 90 strength, 90 dexterity

2.) Have two items equipped with gems slotted that give stat bonuses. Example: item #1 has a gem which gives +20 strength, and item #2 has a gem which gives +20 dexterity.

3.) Item #1 requires 100 dexterity to equip, and Item #2 requires 100 strength to equip.

4.) Each gem slotted raises those requirements. Item #1 gem bumps required dexterity to 105, and item #2 gem bumps required strength to 105

4.) If both items are already equipped, everything is fine, as the bonuses are applied and working. The requirements are met and the example character has 110 strength and 110 dexterity.

5.) Unequip one item. Now the player is unable to equip that item, and the other item is deactivated (red). There's no way to put both items back onto the character regardless of arrangement until those requirements are met by other modifiers.

This is a problem because if a player has other equipment which gave bonuses to strength and dexterity at one point, but has since unequipped and sold those items to replace with new items, they'll never be able to get their once working items reequipped (until they change stats some other way). It's possible to accidentally unequip one of those items, or even unequip them to test other items and not know they wouldn't be able to reequip the same items.

Note this applies to both unequip and gem removal since both can remove stat bonuses.

Recommended Solutions

1.) Change the way the client checks for item requirements when other equipped items are deactivated (red). In other words, combine stat bonuses from all equipped but deactivated items and the one item that the user is attempting to equip. If the modified stats match all requirements, the user should be able to equip the item.

2.) Provide a warning before unequip and gem removal requests when a request to do so would deactivate other equipped items. This will give players a user-friendly way of preventing a "chicken and the egg" catastrophe.

This is intended and not a bug. GGG has stated it's working the way they want it to. You have to be able to equip something before you get the benefits of it.

But you miss the whole "chicken and egg" effect here. With the exact same items and gems, unequipping one of them will break your current equipment. And it was working fine before the unequip. That's a big no-no in gaming.

One of my proposed solutions was to give new players warnings about this during the item unequip or gem removal process.

This game was made by Diablo 2 players. It was this way in Diablo 2 also. I think you underestimate the intelligence of the players. It takes about a second to realize that you needed the stat you removed. It takes another second to figure out you need to equip something that gives you the stats you need to re-equip the item you removed. It shows you in red numbers what requirement you are short on. If it's the gems causing the problem, you can see that red requirement when hovering over it. Remove the gem, put the item back on, and put the gem back in.

No offense, but it sounds like you think players aren't smart enough to solve a simple problem. How many posts do you see in the gameplay help forum where people ask for help figuring out how to re-equip an item?

Not my intention at all. :-)

Now that I know the game works this way, I have to check every time until I get to higher levels with my first character and requirements won't be such a problem.

This is really for the new players and lower level characters.

Whether or not you agree that it's working as intended isn't relevant to posting about this problem in the bug thread. That's for GGG to decide. And just because they made decisions in the past, doesn't mean they've set those choices in stone. The problem with any gaming community is that without new insight and perspective from new players (like me and others), these sort of issues will be forgotten and treated as par for the course.

True. And they have decided. It's not a bug. They have explicitly said so.

Also true. Which is why they made a feedback and suggestion forum for things that are not bugs but people want to discuss doing other ways.

I'm not trying to dismiss your suggestion. Just trying to tell you it's not a bug.

Thanks. :-) I agree that this is also a suggestion.
