What is the purpose of the "Return to Town" when you die and do you use it on purpose?

Ive been playing Path of Exile since 2 years now, and one thing i still dont understand is this option. Could someone please explain me the Purpose behind this? It happened so often to me that i accidentally clicked on it without meaning to (cause I usually spam my mouse buttons ^^)

Strawpoll (would be interessting to know, how many players use them on purpose, at least on this thread)

It's one of those things that has a use but nobody needs, just like conversion trap.
I can only guess but it may be sometimes useful if your spawnpoint is in the middle of trouble and you can't even get your heralsd/Auras/golems up.

that said, I hate it in elder guardians fights that you're forced to resurrect in town
Certainly useful, just not in every situation.

In some cases it is a free portal to town (ex: to gear up or sell stuffs), or to avoid a particularly deadly area (ex: reason of death).
Yeah, I use it.

As soon as I realized that deaths are meaningless and unpunished (in Part 1), I fell into the habit of zerging bosses and even area maps and just pushing through the game through attrition with my first character. Needless to say, it wasn't exactly satisfying. I (foolishly enough) didn't see much point in making any real effort improving my character, so as a result the deaths happened more and more frequently, the game became a rediculous slog, and I ultimately hit a wall in Act 7 with the Maligaro boss fight (which needs to be done in 6 attempts, like a map).

Needless to say, that was a real turning point for me, and really rammed-home the importance of taking the time to learn the mechanics, get the build right, improve my gear and generally play better overall.

That's kind of left me in a peculiar situation where, if I do happen to die these days I'll instinctively press "Return to Town": if I don't, I might find myself doing it again and again, falling into the old habit of trying to zerg my way through problems, and if that happens it will continue until I hit a wall again...

Returning to town gives me the confidence that I'm not progressing the game faster than I'm able to handle it. If I can't kill a boss, or if I keep dying in an area map, that tells me I'm not ready for the even harder content locked behind the boss, so I need to power-up before having another attempt. Or maybe watch a YouTube boss guide in case there's some obvious mechanic I'm falling for which I'm not dealing with correctly.
Because town is where they have dragged your dilapidated , crab masticated corpse to, so some unknown entity can do their mojo on you.

Know how I can tell you don't actually play the game?
Respawn in town is a relic of older times, we did not have checkpoints (or hideouts) in the past. And we did not respawn right outside the boss arena, we had to walk there again.

If anything the other option is an aberration that should have never existed to begin with imho.
SSF is not and will never be a standard for balance, it is not for people entitled to getting more without trading.
